WHY WE LOVE COFFEE

DID YOU REALISE THAT WITH EVERY CUP OF COFFEE THAT YOU INDULGE IN YOU ARE KEEPING THE DOCTOR AWAY.TO TAKE OR NOT TO TAKE COFFEE IS NOT THE QUESTION,HOW MUCH TO TAKE IS WHAT REALLY MATTERS, WRITES DR MERCY……..

Here is a coffee fact that you probably didn’t know .That cup of coffee that you so love has in it lots and lots of healthy products that your body requires. For every cup of coffee that you drink take time to savor in its goodness, it has a lot more than just the good taste.

I will start by explaining a process called oxidation that happens in our body’s .Oxidation is a process where our bodies utilize the body’s glucose stores and in the presence of oxygen is able to produce energy in the form of molecules called ATPs.This is the energy which we rely on to carry out our day to day activities. In the process free radicals are produced and since they are highly unstable they stabilize themselves by reacting with the body’s structural proteins and fatty acids and thus disrupt the functioning of proteins and our cell membranes. Free radicals are considered one of the primary causes of the pathological processes of our bodies. E.G in Type 11 Diabetes, Parkinsonism, colon cancers, increased speed of aging just to mention a few

On the other hand antioxidants are known as free radical scavengers hence prevent or repair damage done by these free radicals. This means that as much as your body is producing free radicals that you have no control over you can counteract their effect by ingesting antioxidants. The good news is that there are bountiful sources of antioxidants .You just need to choose which one works best for you .Which means you can in a way control how fast you age!! Isn’t that exciting?

Examples of antioxidants include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, Falconoid, Polyphones, leucopenia, and lute in.
Recent studies done showed coffee as the number one contributor of antioxidants in the food item list based on antioxidant per serving and frequency of consumption. Green coffee beans contain about 1,000 antioxidants and the brewing process just increases these numbers. The roasting process creates its own set of healthful compounds which like some antioxidants are unique to coffee. The shocking revelation is that coffee has 4x the number of antioxidants as compared to green tea according to Nestle research centre in Switzerland. It outruns herbal teas, cocoa, and red wine.

One of the known coffee components is photogenic and coffee acids which are phenol antioxidants. In consumption of 200mls of coffee one ingests between 70-350mg of photogenic acid. It is estimated that regular coffee drinkers ingest 1g/day of photogenic acid and 300mg/day of coffee acid. Coffee has increased antioxidant activity due to its intrinsic compounds, compounds formed during roasting process and other unidentifiable compounds. According to the American chemical society coffee is the number one source of antioxidants as it is regularly consumed. Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee has similar level of antioxidants

As we all know anything consumed in excess no matter how beneficial it was could be harmful. The same applies for coffee. Consumption of 1-5 cups a day has potentially a lot of health benefits. Excessive coffee consumption can lead to many adverse effects that many of you probably have already experienced .With all these it goes without saying eating a healthy portion of fruits and vegetables is highly advisable. Their health benefits are not just limited to antioxidants.

Did you know that coffee can improve your handwriting and enhance your physical performance?
